A first-time visitor downloads everything from scratch, and on a mid-range phone the processing work of heavy JavaScript costs far more time than it does on a laptop.
The practical habit is to test as a stranger. Open your site in a private window on your actual phone, on cellular data, and try to do the single thing you most want a customer to do. Count the seconds. That number is your real page speed, and it is the one that decides whether the visitor becomes a customer.
What Core Web Vitals Actually Measure
Google measures speed through Core Web Vitals, and the three metrics map to three genuinely different frustrations. Largest Contentful Paint asks how long until the main content appears, which is the wait a visitor experiences as the page being slow. Interaction to Next Paint asks how quickly the page responds when someone taps something, which is the frustration of a button that appears to do nothing. Cumulative Layout Shift measures content jumping around as things load, which is why people tap the wrong link.

Two things matter about how this feeds ranking. The scores Google uses come from real visitors on real devices rather than from a lab test, so your field data can differ from any single score you generate. And speed is a genuine ranking factor but a modest one, which means it will not lift a page that does not deserve to rank. It is better understood as a tiebreaker in search and a decisive factor in conversion.
How to Audit Your Site in Ten Minutes
Run your homepage and your most important service page through PageSpeed Insights, and read the mobile tab rather than the desktop one. Desktop scores flatter almost every site and are not where your customers are. If field data is available for your site, that section is more meaningful than the lab score above it, because it reflects what actual visitors experienced.
Ignore the overall number for a moment and read the opportunities list underneath, which is where the actionable information lives. In our experience the same three items dominate small business sites: oversized images, render-blocking scripts, and fonts loading in a way that delays text appearing.
Then do the human version of the test. Load the page on a phone and watch what happens in the first two seconds. Does text appear quickly, or does the screen sit blank while a large hero image downloads? Does anything jump after you start reading? Those observations frequently tell you more than the score does.

Images are almost always the biggest problem and the easiest fix. The common failure is uploading a photo at full camera resolution and letting the browser scale it down, which means a visitor downloads several megabytes to display something a few hundred pixels wide.
